Russia Expands Military Footprint in Venezuela with New Ammunition Factory

Russia has taken a significant step in strengthening its military ties with Venezuela by completing the construction of a Kalashnikov ammunition factory in the city of Maracay. The facility, developed by Russian state-owned technology conglomerate Rostec, marks a major advancement in the strategic cooperation between Moscow and Caracas. According to reports by Infobae, the factory is now fully operational and will begin manufacturing 7.62x39mm cartridges—ammunition typically used in the AK-103 assault rifle, a standard issue for many armies aligned with Russian military systems.

This development reflects Russia’s ongoing efforts to solidify its influence in Latin America, especially as geopolitical tensions continue to rise between Moscow and the West. Venezuela, under President Nicolás Maduro, remains one of Russia's strongest allies in the region, and this factory adds a new dimension to their military collaboration.

The Kalashnikov facility has reportedly been under construction since 2011, but delays due to sanctions, corruption, and logistical issues pushed back its completion. Now, with full support from Rostec, the plant is expected to produce millions of rounds annually, potentially making Venezuela more self-reliant in arms manufacturing.

Analysts warn that the move may raise alarms in Washington and among other Latin American nations concerned about increased Russian military presence so close to the U.S. sphere of influence. Meanwhile, Venezuela sees this as a key achievement in modernizing its armed forces and boosting national defense capabilities without relying on Western imports.

As global alliances shift, Russia's presence in Venezuela is clearly more than symbolic—it's strategic.
